We’re excited to welcome you to our community of volunteers passionate about using technology for public good in the Fredericton region. This guide will help you understand who we are, how we work, and how to get involved.
About Us
Civic Tech Fredericton is a welcoming and innovative group of volunteers. We are one of many divisions and programs within Greater Fredericton Social Innovation (GFSI), and proud to be part of the national Civic Tech movement started by Code for Canada.
Our members work together on tech projects, building free, open-source solutions that help the community. We have people with different skills and backgrounds, including software developers, designers, project managers, community organizers and more.
At first, you may not find a project that interests you, or there may not be any openings available when you join. However, like many others who enjoy our meet-ups, we encourage you to keep attending—new projects are pitched regularly, and opportunities to get involved are always emerging.
We work with local organizations, non-profits, and government groups to find tech solutions for real-world problems.
A collaborative space connecting people, nonprofits, government, and tech communities to share knowledge and build solutions that drive social change.
Open to everyone—regardless of background or experience.
A safe, respectful environment to build skills and contribute to meaningful projects.
A launchpad for networking, creativity, and innovation.
What Civic Tech Fredericton is not:
Not a Job Placement Agency: Being a part of Civic Tech can help you build your skills, meet people, and get experience. WorkingNB sometimes refers job-seekers to Civic Tech for this reason. We are not a job placement agency, but we support all our members who are seeking employment.
Not Job Interviews: Our meet-ups are not job interviews, but participation can help build skills and professional networks.
Not a Corporation: We are a volunteer-based community initiative supported by a local charity (GFSI).
Not a Paid Internship: Occasionally, GFSI hires Civic Tech members for short-term contracts. This is not guaranteed, depends on funding, and is separate from Civic Tech volunteering.
People join for different reasons, including:
🌐 Networking: Connect with other tech-minded individuals in Fredericton. 💡 Skill Development: Gain practical experience and develop new skills. 🌍 Impact: Contribute to meaningful projects that benefit the community. 📁 Projects: Contribute to projects that can be referenced for potential employers. 🤝 Collaboration: Work with a team on interesting and challenging projects. 🧠 Learning: Learn about technologies, project management, and other relevant skills. 🎉 Joining a great team: We’re not just about tech, but also about community.
You will get out of Civic Tech what you put into it. There is no commitment, but we are committed!
Each project has its own structure and methodology, depending on its specific goals and resources. The City of Fredericton hosts licenses for many of our tools and platforms. We have licences for ESRI ArcGIS, Tableau, AWS, GitHub, Google Workspace, Slack and more.
